Political Education And Critical Empowerment (PEACE) Project
In 2014, the nation of Indonesia will implement a new five-year celebration of democracy. This will happen during the 2014 event of General Election (Election), election of the new legislators, the president and vice-president, where all the Indonesian people who already have the right to vote are invited to participate actively in determining their representatives as the nation's leader for the next five years.
However, it cannot be denied that some of the people (voters) are skeptical about politics. The reasons are diverse and ranging from the mentality of lazy people, to the ones who do not care about politics and finally to the ones that are completely skeptical about politics and elections. So, do not be surprised if a lot of people will choose not to vote (become non-voters) in each election campaign. In fact, from time to time, the number of abstention person is increasing, and every time the election results are showing that the number of people who don’t vote it’s bigger than the number of people who vote.
Indonesian Education in the Red Zone
“Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.”(Nelson Mandela)
Like our body, in order to withstand illnesses, its immunity must be strengthened through—among others—vaccination. In sociological perspective there are three major social problems which have huge negative impacts, namely (i) poverty; (ii) lack of knowledge; and (iii) underdevelopment of civilization. The big question is how to boost the social immune system in order to avoid those three problems? The answer is education. Therefore, education can be the social vaccine.
Besides social vaccine, education also works as social elevator to improve our social status. We need both the social vaccine and elevator so that we can avoid the three social problems and at the same time improve our social status. Education is the answer to the challenges, problems, and wishes of the whole society in preparing a better generation for the future. Education services must be able to reach all levels of society in accordance with the principal of Education for All without discriminating one’s origin, social status, economy and geography.
Civil Society as a Public Sphere: Paguyuban Kelompok Tani as a Public Sphere
Paguyuban Kelompok Tani Sembada Lestari is a public space where the society member engage in economic activities and activities of their democratization. There is no denying the presence of external factors in the realization of civil society. The factor is the support of CSOs that have matured as a civil society. Sembada Insan Foundation had been established in the 1970s have matured in the ideological and institutional. Even the funds, donor agencies have been a customer of USAID to funds for CSOs this (this detail looked in www.yis.or.id). Awareness of the society to participate as agents of change through the community appreciated the independent and relatively immature.
Based on my elaboration above, So I conclude that the Paguyuban Kelompok Tani Sembada Lestari used by the public as an independent public spaces to create a consensus. This facilitates the community and community members to improve the quality of agriculture and contribute to regional development. This consensus process to create a more democratic society that is civil society. Communities that have high levels of easy accessibility to public spaces, people who have a degree of autonomy, the people who reject the existence of a hierarchy within the community, people who have the rule of law, as well as people who have aspirations of quality. All are clad in a public space called the Paguyuban Kelompok Tani Sembada Lestari.
But there are new findings that self-awareness is not the only factor of the public sphere and civil society. But there are supporting factors such as the interests of other fellow actors of civil society to empower people and make society as civil society and corporate accountability in terms of CSR to account for the existence of the company by building societies. These relationships contributed to my conclusion that the civil society as a public space is not entirely due to self consciousness.
